The Augusta GreenJackets, Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in the Carolina League, will play two games next week as the Augusta Soul, a tribute to their hometown’s musical heritage. The team will wear custom uniforms with a logo that features a vinyl record and typography that evokes the classic soul era of the 1960s and ’70s.

Augusta’s most significant claim to musical fame is that James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, grew up there and spent much of his adulthood in the city. Visitors to Augusta can experience the life of James Brown through sites like his childhood home, a statue in his honor, theaters where he performed, and the radio station that he owned.

Augusta was the birthplace of another icon of soul and funk, Sharon Jones, of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings fame, who was born in the city and is the namesake of North Augusta’s amphitheater, which was renamed in her honor in 2020, four years after her death.

“Augusta Soul honors that legacy while bringing it to life in a new way at SRP Park,” the team said in a statement. “It is a tribute to the artists who moved the world, the places that shaped the sound, and the fans who give this community its rhythm today.”

The Augusta soul will take the field June 19 and 20.
